About This Piece
Some projects are about restoring value. Others are about pushing craftsmanship further and seeing what the metal will allow. This revolver became exactly that kind of project.
What started as a simple black powder kit gun turned into a full engraving piece — a chance for Jeff to explore traditional scrollwork across the flowing curves and tight angles that make revolvers both beautiful and demanding to engrave. Every cut on the barrel, back strap, and trigger guard was done completely by hand before the revolver was carefully re-blued to bring the contrast and detail back to life.
The engraving itself is where the real challenge begins. Firearms like this aren’t flat surfaces — every contour changes the depth, angle, and pressure of the cut. On many sections, Jeff could only engrave a millimeter or two at a time before repositioning both the piece and the engraver to keep the scrollwork flowing smoothly and consistently.
Some areas required specially bent engraving tools — similar in shape to dental instruments — just to reach into the tighter curves without interrupting the line work. It’s slow, detailed work that demands patience and control, especially when engraving around compound curves and transitions.
Rather than overwhelming the revolver with decoration, the goal was balance: enough engraving to highlight the craftsmanship and bring character to the piece while still respecting the original form of the firearm.
This project reflects something Jeff has always appreciated about engraving — the ability to take steel, brass, and wood and turn them into something with personality, history, and permanence.

Maker’s Note
“Engraving a revolver like this teaches patience more than anything else. Every curve changes the cut, so you learn to slow down, adjust, and let the work guide you instead of forcing it.”
