About This Piece
Some knives showcase beautiful materials.
Others showcase craftsmanship.
The Double Fileworked Mammoth Bowie manages to do both.
Forged from a reclaimed farrier's file, the blade carries a history of its own while providing the durability and edge-holding qualities that have made file steel a favorite among bladesmiths for generations. The classic Bowie profile gives the knife a commanding presence while maintaining excellent balance and handling characteristics.
The handle combines fossilized mammoth tusk ivory and rich rosewood, creating a striking contrast between light and dark natural materials. Together they provide warmth, texture, and character while ensuring that no two pieces could ever be exactly alike.
A polished nickel silver guard frames the handle and provides a clean transition from blade to handle. Along the spine of the blade, crosshatched thumb serrations offer enhanced control and grip while reinforcing the knife's practical nature.
The defining feature of this piece is the extensive hand filework that extends along both the upper and lower surfaces of the handle. While most knives limit decorative filework to the spine, this design carries the detail work throughout the handle itself, creating a level of craftsmanship rarely seen in custom knives. The pattern resembles a skeletal spine running the length of the handle, giving the knife a distinctive appearance from every angle.
Built from reclaimed steel and premium natural materials, this Bowie represents the intersection of craftsmanship, patience, and a willingness to pursue an idea simply because it could be done.

Maker's Note:
Sometimes an idea seems simple until you start making it. The filework on this knife became far more challenging than I originally expected, especially along the underside of the handle. In the end, the extra effort created a piece unlike anything else I've built, and that's part of what makes it memorable.
