About This Piece
Every handmade knife begins with raw material.
Some begin with steel specifically intended for blades. Others begin with something that has already spent years serving a purpose before being given a second life.
This handcrafted subhilt hunter began as a farrier's file.
Forged from reclaimed high carbon steel, the blade carries the legacy of its original purpose while taking on an entirely new form. The result is a durable working blade with excellent edge retention and the character that comes from repurposing quality steel into something built to last for generations.
The subhilt design provides both visual distinction and enhanced control. By creating a natural indexing point for the hand, the subhilt offers a secure grip while adding a classic profile that has long been appreciated by hunters and collectors alike.
The handle combines natural antler crown material with traditional leather spacers, creating a warm and rugged appearance that feels connected to the outdoors. Rather than removing the unique shape of the antler crown, it has been preserved as part of the design, ensuring that no two knives could ever be exactly alike.
Nickel silver guards frame the handle beautifully and provide a clean transition between materials. The contrast between polished metal, natural antler, and stacked leather spacers creates a timeless look that complements the knife's handcrafted origins.
A distinctive textured section near the ricasso serves as a reminder of the blade's beginnings, preserving a connection to the steel's former life while adding character to the finished piece.
Built with practical use in mind yet rich with traditional craftsmanship, this knife represents the transformation of a hardworking tool into a new tool ready for years of service.

Maker's Note:
I've always enjoyed giving old steel a new purpose. A farrier's file is already a hardworking tool, and turning it into a knife feels like continuing its story rather than starting a new one. The antler crown and leather spacers seemed like the perfect match for a blade with that kind of history.
