Frontier Pair – Hand Engraved Winchester 1894 & Black Powder Revolver

About This Piece
Some projects become more than engraving.
They become a tribute to the spirit of the American frontier itself.
This matched set pairs two iconic firearm styles — a Winchester Model 1894 chambered in .44 Magnum alongside a fully engraved .44 caliber black powder revolver — both transformed through extensive hand engraving and custom metalwork by Jeff Loehr.
Every scroll, border, and shaded background was cut completely by hand. No machine engraving. No shortcuts. Just hours at the bench shaping steel and brass one line at a time.
The Winchester carries traditional scroll engraving throughout the receiver and metal accents, balanced carefully to preserve the clean lines and working character of the rifle itself. Gold inlay details and a Pony Express rider motif bring a strong western influence into the piece without overpowering the firearm’s original design.
The walnut stock was handcrafted and fitted specifically for the rifle, then inlaid with an 1894 silver dollar featuring a custom “hobo nickel” engraving — a subtle detail that ties directly into the rifle’s heritage and era. At the butt of the stock sits a custom brass buttplate bordered with sterling silver trim, fully hand engraved to match the flowing scrollwork found throughout the rifle.
The accompanying .44 caliber black powder revolver received equally extensive work. Nearly every visible surface of the brass frame was hand engraved, including the back strap, trigger guard, underside, barrel details, and surrounding components. The revolver carries the same traditional scroll style as the rifle, creating a visual relationship between the two pieces while still allowing each firearm its own personality.
What makes engraving projects like these especially demanding is the constant change in contour and angle. Every curve of a revolver frame, every edge of a rifle receiver, and every transition in the metal changes how the graver must be held and controlled. The work requires patience, consistency, and the discipline to let the design flow naturally with the firearm rather than fight against it.
Together, this pair represents traditional craftsmanship layered onto classic American firearms — not simply decoration, but the continuation of an old-world engraving tradition built around patience, steel, and skilled hands.

Maker’s Note
“Projects like these are about honoring the firearm without taking away from what made it iconic to begin with. The engraving should feel like it belongs there — as though the piece was always meant to carry it.”
— Jeff Loehr, Engraver & Craftsman
