About This Piece
Every craftsman has a first project—the moment when practice ends and commitment begins.
This AMT Skipper 1911 holds a special place in Jeff Loehr's engraving journey as the first firearm he ever engraved. Until this point, engraving had been practiced on smaller projects and test pieces. This was the moment when the tools met a real firearm and the lessons learned became permanent.
Working on his own pistol provided the freedom to experiment, learn, and take risks without the pressure of a customer's expectations. The resulting engraving features flowing scrollwork, feather motifs, and decorative backgrounds that would later become recognizable elements throughout Jeff's work.
Looking back, every engraver can see things they might approach differently today. Yet that is part of what makes a first project meaningful. It captures a craftsman standing at the beginning of a journey, trusting his skills, making the first cuts, and discovering what would eventually become his own artistic style.
The pistol sold only two days after completion, providing early encouragement that the journey had been worth taking.
