About This Piece

For decades, Jeff Loehr has built fixed-blade knives, jewelry, engraved firearms, and custom heirloom pieces by hand. This knife marks a different milestone—the successful completion of his first handcrafted folding knife.

While a folding knife may appear simple from the outside, it introduces an entirely new level of complexity. Every component must work in harmony. The blade must open smoothly, seat properly when closed, align precisely when open, and maintain reliable operation through countless cycles. The challenge is not simply creating a knife—it is creating a mechanism.

This slip-joint folder represents that achievement.

The blade is forged from Damascus steel, showcasing the flowing layered patterns that have become a signature element of many of Jeff's knives. Measuring 3.25 inches in length, the blade offers a practical everyday carry size while maintaining the elegance and character of a custom handmade piece.

The handle is crafted from burgundy and black G10, shaped with deep contours that naturally guide the hand into a secure and comfortable grip. The layered material creates subtle waves of color throughout the handle, complementing the organic patterns found within the Damascus steel.

At the pivot sits a hand-engraved nickel silver bolster, adding a level of detail rarely found on working folders. The engraving serves as a reminder that this knife was not assembled from parts—it was individually crafted, fitted, finished, and decorated by hand.

With an overall length of 7.75 inches when open, the knife balances utility, craftsmanship, and portability. It is equally at home as an everyday carry piece or as a collectible representation of a maker expanding his craft.

For Jeff, this knife marks the beginning of a new chapter—one where traditional bladesmithing meets the precision mechanics of folding knife construction.

Maker's Note

"I've built knives for many years, but folding knives present an entirely different challenge. Every surface, every fit, and every movement matters. This knife taught me a great deal, and seeing it come together was incredibly rewarding. It's the first folder I've completed, but it certainly won't be the last."

— Jeff Loehr, Bladesmith
